Originally subtitled “Being some account of the fearful disaster which overtook the inhabitants of this earth through scientific miscalculation in the year 1904,” this tale by British writer Robert Barr (1849–1912) falls within the subgenre of stories in which doomsday is threatened by irresponsible science or experiments that get out of hand. Its earnest approach might have caused readers of it in the April 1900 issue of McClure’s to miss the humor of its depiction of a nitrogen-depleted earth whose populace is giddily intoxicated by an excess of oxygen.
